Crime Victim Services: Your Voice, Advocate And Guide
As a crime victim, you’ve already endured unimaginable trauma. The criminal justice system can be overwhelming, intimidating, and even retraumatizing. It’s natural to wonder: who will advocate for me? The state has a lawyer, the prosecutor, and the defendant likely has a defense lawyer, but who will be your voice?
Many crime victims don’t realize they may be entitled to free legal representation. That’s where I come in.
I’m Connie Bentley McGhee, Esq., an attorney for crime victims in Newark and surrounding areas. With over 30 years of legal experience, I’ve spent my career helping people navigate the complexities of the criminal court system. I’m here to listen to you, advocate for you, help you make informed choices, maintain strict confidentiality and uphold your dignity throughout the criminal justice process.
How Victim Advocacy Differs From Prosecution
Prosecutors work for the government, building cases and securing convictions. They represent the state, not you as an individual.
As your victim’s rights lawyer, my sole focus is your well-being and interests. I’ll:
- Explain your rights and the legal process in plain language
- Keep you informed about case developments
- Help you prepare victim impact statements and other court submissions
- Advocate for your voice to be heard in court, if appropriate
- Assist with obtaining protective orders if needed
- Protect your confidentiality to the fullest extent
Every case is different. Whether you were the victim of human trafficking, domestic violence, DUI/DWI, robbery, murder or another violent crime, I can provide guidance and representation tailored to your needs.
New Jersey’s Victims Of Crime Compensation Office
Many people don’t know that the state Victims of Crime Compensation Office (VCCO) provides compensation for eligible victims of violent crimes who need financial assistance for expenses related to the crime. These funds may cover not only legal representation but also medical bills, therapy, lost income from missed work and other expenses related to the crime.
I know how to navigate the ins and outs of the VCCO. I can determine if you’re eligible for these funds and, if so, I can help speed up the process and spare you the headaches and red tape. My goal is to help crime victims access it and get the support they need.
You’re Not Alone
When you’ve had your world turned upside down by a crime, it’s easy to feel alone. You may have been stripped of your peace, stability and well-being. Thankfully, you don’t have to face the criminal justice system alone. I can provide compassionate support every step of the way.
